Marawi City Initiatives

When the news of the armed conflict in Marawi erupted, the Community Extension Services Office (CESO) organized the Marawi City Initiatives in partnership with the Student Affairs Office and Supreme Student Government.

Psychosocial Debriefing

The psychosocial debriefing activity was organized in response to the need from the home based IDPs in the Muslim village here in the city though the PSWDO. The CESO was invited to join the organizational meeting with all the Muslim leaders in the province, CSWDO, PSWDO, municipal officer of SWDO, representative of the governor Dr. Lopez and City DOH officer. Soon after the CESO organize a group of university psychologists lead by Ms. Teresa Garcia, head Guidance Center to conduct the stress debriefing.

The activity aimed to provide psychosocial intervention to the home based Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs); including children, from Marawi City who was experiencing emotional trauma and stress brought by the armed conflict in the city. According to research, psychosocial intervention helps reduce anxiety and lessen the likelihood of developing post-traumatic symptoms among individuals who have been exposed to traumatic events.

The stress debriefing was conducted at the Barangay Taloto Muslim Village last July 11, 2017 and was lead by the Guidance Counselors and facilitated by the student peer facilitators. There were also Muslim students who were recruited that served as the interpreter during the activity.

The module used was adopted from the Alternative to Violence Project which included storytelling, drawing, and play therapies. After the said activity food packs were distributed to all the 83 IDP’s.


Relief Operations

In a bid to help the victims of Marawi City crisis, the relief operations was immediately organized to respond to the needs of the IDP’s as assessed by PSWDO. It aimed to provide relief goods for the Marawi City evacuees who were displaced in the established home based evacuation centers in the different Muslim Villages situated in Barangay Taloto, Poblacion 1, Poblacion 3 of Tagbilaran City and Jagna, Bohol.

The different departments of the university, parents and alumni joined together to donate food items, used clothes, hygiene kits, towels, sleeping mats and blanket for the internally displaced persons. The officers of the Supreme Student Government helped in the collection, re-packing and distribution of the goods. The relief distribution was done last July 25, 2017.


Dagan Para sa UBan

As part of the continued Tabang Para sa UBan operations and the University’s thrust on service, a run fund-raising activity, as initiated by the Community Extension Services Office, was done as a resource generation activity for the populace affected by the Marawi City siege. The fun run and walk also served as the University’s fitness day.

Objectives:
    The fun and walk fund-raising activity aimed to:
    1. Generate funds to be able to send financial support to the affected populace of Marawi City.
    2. Instil positive ways of doing action service to others while promoting healthy lifestyle.

Proceeds of the Dagan Para sa UBan was personally given last January 18, 2018 to DepEd School Division of Marawi City thru Dr. Pharida Sansarona OIC School Division Superintendent of Marawi City and the school recipient was Pendolanan Elementary School. This was in coordination with the Executive Director of Health Organization for Mindanao, Mr. Omar Sinsuat, who provided for the logistics. They are the university co-member of the Humanitarian Response Consortium in partnership with University of Bohol Community Development Foundation Inc. (UBCDFI). The activity was facilitated by CESO, SAO and SSG.


One Love Marawi

A benefit concert was spearheaded by the Student Affairs Office (SAO) and the Supreme Student Government (SSG) in partnership with the Events Management Class of Mr. James Tabigue of the College of Hospitality Management Tourism and Nutrition and at the same time the University Student Activity Assistant.

The Rock Steady Band was invited over to do the benefit concert held in the University quadrangle attended by the whole university community and outsiders. Total proceeds of the benefit concert amounted to P200, 000.00. The amount will be added on to the donation given to Pendolanan Elementary School as soon as the school has submitted an accomplishment report on the progress of the first donation given.

The benefit concert was co-presented by Hon. City Mayor John Geesnel “Baba” Yap and the City of Tagbilaran. With its major sponsors that included Disco Records Center and Bohol Tropics Resort and the minor sponsor by JJ’s Seafood Village. The official Event Organizer was lead by UB Events Management Class of 2017-2018 with the official catering partner which are the UB Banquet, Function and Catering Services Procedures Class of 2017-2018. The event was also made possible with the assistance of UB General Services Office, UB Safety and Security Office, Tagbilaran City Police Office and Tagbilaran City Fire.
