UB Karate Team kicks its way to virtual kata glory

The University of Bohol Karatedo Team recently displayed their martial arts prowess during the 17th Friendship Games International Virtual Kata E-Tournament, held virtually last February 13, 2021.

Officially registered under the SSKI-JKS (Sphinx Shotokan Karatedo International – Japan Karate Shoto) Tagbilaran City team, the UB fighters won 3 golds, 4 silvers and 3 bronzes during the tournament. The gold medal winners were Wyna Grace Curayag (UB Junior High School), Plinky Jade Acog (College of Criminal Justice), and Cristy Marize Pusta (College of Criminal Justice) who each won 1 gold.

Meanwhile, Stiffany Mae Alvarez (UB Junior High School), Leanne Marie Alvarez (UB Grade School), Yienna Vic Lloren (College of Criminal Justice), and Eveline Van Der Hoek (VDTALC) each bagged a silver. Winning a bronze each were Justie Athena Jaspe (VDTALC), Richard Maglente (College of Criminal Justice), and Mark Vincent Lucero (Junior High School). As a result of its efforts, the UB Team placed 3rd overall.

A couple of months earlier, the same SSKI-JKS Tagbilaran City team had run rampant in the 17th PASKA (Progressive Arts and Sports Karatedo Association) Founding Anniversary Virtual E-Kata Tournament held last December 20, 2020.

Leading the medal haul were Richard Maglente and Kriza Mae Jaspe with 2 golds each, while Stiffany Mae Alvarez, Leanne Marie Alvarez, Plinky Jade Acog, and Lee Ann Montero (College of Criminal Justice) each won 1 gold for a total of 8 golds.

Meanwhile, Stiffany Mae Alvarez, Yienna Vic Lloren, and Justie Athena Jaspe each won a silver medal for 3 total silvers. The team also nabbed 7 bronze medals courtesy of Eveline Van Der Hoek, Mark Vincent Lucero and Wyna Grace Curayag, who each took home 2 bronzes, and Leanne Marie Alvarez and with 1 bronze. At the end of the tournament, the UB Team placed 2nd overall.

The UB Karatedo team is under the tutelage and stewardship of Sensei Sonny Alvarez.
