UB extends help to Mindanao quake victims

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit in Mindanao for the third time at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2019, 15 days after the first destructive tremor shook the same parts of Cotabato and other regions on October 16. The quake happened just two days after a second major tremor, which registered a magnitude of 6.6, killing several people and hurting hundreds of others in the region on the morning of Tuesday, October 29. Two of the hardest-hit municipalities were Tulunan and Makilala. Tulunan, a second class rural municipality, was the epicenter of the first two earthquakes that destroyed nearly 1,259 houses and displaced 3,237 families. Meanwhile, in Makilala, about 2,250 residential homes and government buildings were damaged, with at least 83,000 people in 38 villages affected, according to Makilala Mayor Armando Quibod.

In solidarity with the victims and in line with the university’s commitment to humanitarian response as one of its core advocacy programs in community extension, the University of Bohol (UB) through the Community Extension Services Office, Student Affairs Office, Supreme Student Government, University of Bohol/Rafael Palma College Alumni Association, Inc., Federated Parents and Teachers Association, and UB employees donated a total of P205,855.00 to Tulunan and Makilala, Cotabato Province.

En.P. Leonard S. Legarda, Phd, Makilala Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator and Giovanni Ignacio, Municipal Treasurer received the donation in behalf of Mayor Armando M. Quibod.

The team personally handed over the donation to the Local Government Unit’s (LGU’s) of Tulunan and Makilala, Cotabato. The amount donated in Tulunan will be used to build a temporary learning center in New Caridad High School, New Caridad, Tulunan, which is one of the devastated schools in the municipality occupied by Blaan indigenous people. Meanwhile, the donation in Makilala will be used to renovate the local LGU managed Makilala Institute of Science and Technology (MIST).
