The University of Bohol (UB), through its Community Extension Services Office (CESO), joined the 3rd Colleges and Universities Public Service Conference (CUPSCon3) held last October 16-18, 2019 in the University of the Philippines - Visayas City Campus Auditorium, Iloilo City. The said confab was hosted by the University of the Philippines Padayon Public Service Office under the Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs (OVPPA).
The CUPSCon3 was a three-day conference that highlighted the best research, development and extension practices of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) that benefited sectors such as the national and local government, private sector, civil society, marginalized communities, and the general public. It convened representatives from the academe, government, non-government/non-profit organizations, and private industry for scholarly discussion on community-engaged teaching and learning, knowledge-driven volunteerism, and linkages between the university and other sectors of society.
Dr. Ernesto Pernia, the current Socio-economic Planning Secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), was the keynote speaker. He discussed advancing public service through academe-community partnership, and he emphasized that the academe should part of the journey in delivering relevant, strategic, and sustainable public service.
He further added that communities should be treated as partners in research and development activities so that they can contribute to translating indigenous knowledge into appropriate policies and practical actions on the ground. The promotion of structure partnerships between (HEIs) and stakeholders in the communities, business, and industry is also emphasized in the Philippine Development Plan with the integration of formal research and innovation efforts with informal grassroots knowledge and innovation.
The team from UB presented two of the best projects of the university, namely Humanitarian Response – Help for Marawi City, which was presented by Dr. Marilou V. Fudalan, UB’s community extension services officer. Meanwhile, And Adopt-a-Day Care Center was presented by Mr. Robert L. Taguisa, the community extension services coordinator of the UB - Victoriano B. Tirol Advanced Learning Center (UB-VDTALC).
