Tirol breaks 14-year Palaro swim record, younger bro also shines

Philippine junior team member and UB VDT-ALC alumnus Rian Marco Adiong Tirol broke the 14-year-old record of the Palarong Pambansa 100m Breaststroke Secondary Boys Division during the 2019 Palarong Pambansa on April 28- May 4, 2019, at the University of the Philippines - Mindanao in Davao City.
The Boholano swimming sensation clocked a new record time of 1:06.09 in erasing the 1:07.38 time of Gerard Bordado, set in the 2005 edition of Palarong Pambansa. Bordado is a former Philippine Swimming Team stalwart who participated in the 2005 South East Asian Games and 2006 Asian Games.
Tirol, a recent Senior High School graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, hauled a total of three golds and one silver in his seventh and final Palarong Pambansa appearance. He represented Central Visayas five times while representing the National Capital Region in the last two meets.
The Atenean recently splashed his way to a sterling performance in the 50th Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championship last March 19-24 at the OCBC Aquatic Center in Singapore where he broke the Philippine national junior record in the 50m breaststroke with a new record time of 29.54. With his performance, Rian earned a slot in the National team that will represent the country in the 2019 SEA Age Group Swimming Championship to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on June 28 to 30, 2019.
On the other hand, Victoriano Martin A. Tirol IV, a Grade 7 student of the University of Bohol - Victoriano D. Tirol Advanced Learning Center held his own despite swimming against stronger and seasoned Senior High School students by placing in the top 20 out of 40 swimmers in all his swimming events.
Renzo, as he is fondly called is the youngest CVIRRA swimmer and among the youngest participants in the entire Palarong Pambansa for Secondary.
The two are prized products of the University of Bohol Rockets Swimming Team. They are the children of UB President Dr. Victoriano B. Tirol III and UB Vice President for Finance Dr. Maricel Adiong Tirol.
