UB links farmers

Expanding its corporate social responsibility to the victims of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the province, the University of Bohol thru the UB Community Development Foundation, Inc. (UBCDFI) jointly undertake “Sawali Making Project in Bohol “ with Maitum Coconut Farmer Association (MACFA) of Catigbian, Bohol as partner organization.

Dr. Gloria T. Casabal, UBCDFI director and former United Nations medical worker bared that the project is under the Philippine-Australia Community Assistance Program (PACAP) — Yolanda which is also supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The project aims to contribute to the local livelihood recovery of Catigbian by supporting and enhancing the existing small scale bamboo-based production industry in the municipality.




Per Memorandum of Agreement (MOU), UBCDFI supports in the planning, operation, management, coordination and other related activities in the implementation of the project. It is likewise responsible for the quality of project interventions and linkages and collaboration with the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) in the marketing of sawali produced and its sustainability. The extension service arm of the university is also tasked to conduct capability building to the members of the local farmers cooperative in the operational and financial management of the project as well as in the commitment to practice environment protection.

The MOU on “Sawali Making Project in Bohol — (Catigbian)“ was officialy signed by Dr. Gloria T. Casabal of the UBCDFI and Mr. Jorge L. Andamon, MACFA president on May 2014. The signing was witnessed by the cooperative members and students leaders of the College of Business and Accountancy led by Ms. LalaineDajao, faculty member.

In a parallel development, student volunteers of UB Operation Tabang Para saUbansimultaneously distributed school supplies to pupils of Maitum Elementary School in Catigbian town. With donationscoming from its alumni and students, the school continues to extend humanitarian operations to earthquake and other calamity victims not only within the province of Bohol but to other provinces as well.
